Sport generally supposes sacrifices from all points of view but equitation need more then that, it needs effort, time and motivation. Riding is a sport that combines pleasure and talent, courage and determination. It means to stay in contact with a vigorous and full of energy, but intelligent and understanding being at the same time. Riding is not just a physical excercise, it means gymnastics of intelligence and character, an excercise of patience, gentleness and energy.

Even if my first riding lessons were jumping lessons I have always loved dressage. When some children had pictures of horses jumping huge fences I always had pictures of canter pirouettes and half-pass.

I believe that dressage is the base of all horse disciplines; it doesn’t matters if you want to specialize in show jumping, cross country or dressage. I have seen so many jumping lessons in which people were train to turn their horses nose to the outside and kick them in order to canter, many of that horses being so tense that they were jigging the whole time and were spooking at everything and I decided to make something different. Yes, you may bully the horse into submission, but you will never gain his love or respect.

I believe that it don’t exist bad horses just inexperienced rider. Any horse can be trained if you give him enough time and you create a bound between the rider and the horse. This is why I believe that riding lessons should start in the stall with grooming of the horse. For me it doesn’t exist riding without this bound between the rider and his horse and this is why I think that riders shouldn’t change horses between them.

The bond between the rider and his horse is so deep that a horse can do the best he can for his rider, but with another rider it can be unrecognizable and perform only mediocre. You can ride almost any horse and make something mediocre, but if you want to be the best you have to ride a horse with which you have a strong bond.

My horse is my friend! I believe in respecting the horse. Horses give us so much and it is our least obligation to respect them in recognition of their efforts. It is time we horse people learn to appreciate this blessing we have - you may love golf, tennis, or motor racing, but neither the golf club, the tennis ball, or the car will ever love you back.

For some riding is an art, for others it is a sport, but for me it means art and sport as well, and it may be any of them, or both at the same time. At the end all it really matters is to come out of the dressage and jumping ring knowing that you and your horse have performed at the best that you can.
